LG 42LH90 42-Inch 1080p 240Hz LED Backlit LCD HDTV, Glossy Black/Infused Blue Review

I have been looking around for a 1080p TV for a long time to upgrade my room and I finally came to buy this TV and I would never look back. I wanted a TV good for gaming, has great picture clarity, and of course good HD playback whether it be Blu-Ray or HD channels on cable. This TV has lived up to all of my expectations that I had for it except for one problem. The 240Hz “TruMotion” even when on low has some distorting effect on moving background images. Usually nothing that takes a lot away from the overall picture and nothing that lasts more than a couple seconds but I always seem to find those things. I am convinced it is the 240Hz considering I have watched the same movies on 120Hz 1080p LED TV and there was only very slight distortions. When playing a Blu-Ray on 1080p, it is less noticeable than if you where watching HBO HD or some other Cable TV HD channel.

Picture clarity and brightness are phenomenal! We have the Samsung 55″ LED set downstairs and when I compared it almost looked like this LG was brighter and was more clear when playing a Blu-Ray disc, or playing a PS3 game. Sound quality is very good of built in speakers. Usually I can’t let it go over 40 otherwise it is too loud when comparing it to the Samsung, sometimes we need to put the volume all the way up to 85-90.

Overall I am very happy with this TV for the price that I paid for it, I just bought a new Blu Ray player to replace my Samsung P1500, I will be hooking up a Panasonic DMP-DB85K later this week to see if it will make any difference in Blu-Ray clarity. So far the best movie that I have watched on this TV picture-wise is District 9… watched that yesterday and WOW it was an amazingly clear, crisp and bright picture.

If you are looking for a closer to budget priced 1080p LED TV this would be the TV you should consider.

EDIT:

2 days ago I hooked up my Panasonic DMP-DB85K Blu Ray player and I will say there is a a slight difference over my older Samsung model. I went through the settings on the DVD player and turned on the 24p setting (plays the dvd at 24 frames per second which is what movies are recorded in) and there was a good difference in playback.

I also played around with some settings in the picture menu, about the distortion about black edges/images… I turned the “Black Level” setting to High and I keep TruMotion 240hz to Low and I notice that there is less distortion on Blu Ray play back. I will continue to play around with some settings and see if there can be any more changes I can make.

THX Certified Says It All – Chad A. Hasselius –
I read in the online reviews that LG had the lowest priced LED backlit HDTVs, and I also read they were some of the highest quality LCD Tvs on the market- probably second to Samsung. So I knew this is what I was looking for.

As others have pointed out, it was packed very well and delivered flawlessly. It has a large bezel around the TV so it has a rather large footprint for a 42″ TV. And it has good sound for a TV, so good that an external soundbar would probably be a waste.

It has a number of features you wouldn’t think about a TV having:
-XD Engine to upscale lower definition video to look better on your high definition TV
-”Smart Volume” Auto Volume Leveler for those jarring commercial breaks
-”True voice” makes voice dialog more crisp sounding
-Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder with ability to downmix it for the TV’s 2 integrated (and hidden) speakers

Last, but not least, this TV is THX certified for high picture quality. Only a handful of TVs are THX certified.

As [...] puts it: “THX certified displays are tested to ensure they meet or exceed specifications in two areas. One is picture quality–device performance, in THX’s words–and includes minimum specs for things like black levels, contrast, color gamut, brightness, resolution and uniformity. The other is “signal” (or video) processing, which includes things like sharpness, noise reduction, overscan, motion compensation and deinterlacing. All certified TVs are tested to make sure they meet or exceed minimum standards.”

As [...] puts it: “Inside THX’s test lab, we observed their array of test signals and procedures. In addition to the legacy test signals we and other reviewers use to evaluate HDTVs, THX created some of their own patterns. THX tests signal processing, deinterlacing, color points, black levels and white levels among others criteria. They perform additional testing of display properties that are generally too time consuming or require special test equipment the HD Guru and our fellow reviewers don’t possess.”

My personal test of whether a TV is high quality or not is while looking at them in the store some of them will have a pixelated, blocky look to the picture when looking up close. This one doesn’t. The picture is as sharp up close as it is from far back. The only negative I can think of is that it doesn’t turn on instantly. It takes about 20 seconds to boot up and turn on after you have hit the power button.

One of The Best Led TV !!! Amazing – Luis A. Burgos – New Jesey
I own this tv for about 3 Months and i love everything about this tv .. amazing picture…All my friends freak out when i put a bluray movie on… THis Tv is a full LED backlighting with local dimming( Not LED-backlit TVs which is a downgrade)..

Brief review of LG 42LH90 – Walt Wagner – Raleigh, NC
There are more detailed reviews before this one so I choose not to be redundant. Set-up is easy and the remote is simple and easy to use. This LCD has full array LED backlighting. The real thin LED sets are using edge lighting with diffusers. They are OK but the light is not always evenly dispersed. It appears more mfgs are using edge lighting since it is probably less costly to produce and the sets are much thinner. Either way, the LCD sets with LED backlighting give you an amazing picture. Sound quality is average as most of thr newer sets seem to be designed for use with a separate sound system. The frame of the 42LH90 is not as narrow as other sets thus making it look king of bulky for a 42 inch set. The pedestal mount that comes with the unit is somewhat wobbly. It is a buyers market right now so you should be able to get a local retailer to offer the set for the same price as on line. I did. Expect to pay 00 to 00 right now (early May 2010). That’s not much money for a 42 inch LED, 1080p, 120Hz(quasi 240Hz) HDTV.

very good tv – John J. Hall – San Francisco, Ca United States
The 42LH90 is a very good TV. Very good picture. A little blooming, I just listened to some advice in other reviews to calibrate the tv myself. I used the STANDARD selection as my jumping off point. I really didn’t realize that some people on TV look so bad. The picture quality is really good. I have it connected to my own audio system. Swivel stand is great. I had an LG 42 inch, 720p, 1100 to 1 resolution from 3 or 4 yrs ago. This TV is quite lighter, throws off less heat and has a more superior picture. I hope the quality and durability is the same. So far, so good.

LG 42LD550 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV Review

This is my first LCD TV and I spent few days doing some research to choose a good TV. I did a specification comparison between several LCD TVs and finally had to decided between LG and Samsung. I choose LG TV as this one has 120HZ with 2.4 ms refresh rate.I am not sure how do these features affect the picture quality but this TV has excellent picture. I mostly watch movies over internet using netcast/DVD player and didn’t watch fast sport action yet. Sound quality for this TV is regular and you need to buy speakers if you want something special.

The wining feature for this TV was the Netcast functionality. I watch a lot of Netflix streaming over internet and this works great for me. You need to have atlease 3 MbPS connections to watch HD movies. Currently you can only have Yahoo Widgets, Netflix, Vudu, Picasa web album and Youtube available (no web-surfing).

I am disappointed that I had to buy a LG wireless adaptor ($ Seventy) to access wifi. You can use a LAN wired connection as default without the adaptor. This TV also has some power save modes which I am using a lot to decrease the brighness when needed or switch off the display when not needed (listening to music). As this is not a heavy TV (around 40 lb), so it is relatively easy to hang this on wall.

If Netcast is not what you need then I would recomend to have a look at LG 42LD520 which is a chaper bet than this one. I bought this TV when there were no review in Amazon but I am happy with my purchase and price.

I don’t have Cable or Dish at my home so I can’t comment on that.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

So glad I made this purchase! – J. Parish – Portland, OR
I love, love, love my new TV. Awesome picture and ability to instant view movies and other programs as well as Internet capabilities at a reasonable price. It is everything I wanted as an addition to my home theatre.

Seeing is Believeing – Dennis F. Lasanen – usa-ohio
I am very pleased with the LG capability. It receives movies from Net Flix thru my DSL connection. It was easy to program. It also receives extra HD stations thru the basic cable service. I was previously viewing from a Sharp 32″ LC-32D43U Aquos 2008 TV but was only able to receive Net Flix thru a graphics accelerator card connection from my Dell Computer by HDMI connection. I receive a lot better quality sound from this LG. Adjustments are easier to make for the picture and sound. The quality will be remembered long after the price that was paid will have been forgotton.

I think it’s love. – Ryan Boam – Layton, UT United States
I had been planning on buying a new tv for quite a while, and did as much reading and research as time would permit. I kept coming back to the LG 42LD550. What really sold me on it was the Netcast (powered by the WiFi USB dongle), super-high contrast ratio, wireless-ready, and the price. The price! Man, a tv like this would have cost several thousand dollars a few years ago.

At any rate, I’ve been working this set for about 2 weeks now, and I love it. The picture quality is amazing, it’s very responsive, the remote is very good, and even the speakers are decent. If you spring for the wireless box, you have the option of mounting it straight on the wall with no unsightly cables hanging off of it (or being routed through the drywall). Now it makes for a beautiful centerpiece of my entertainment center, which the wife loves to show off (win-win).

The World Cup is going to look mighty nice in HD on this tv!

Sharp LC-C4067UN AQUOS 1920 x 1080 Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Hi,

This TV is by no means perfect, but I think it’s good value for 1080p. I was a bit paranoid about the TV being 60Hz vs 120Hz, but have found no major issues. I have the TV about 4 weeks and have watched football, ice hockey, track and field and a few blue ray movies on a PS3 and saw no major problems. The film mode in the advanced menu also seems to handle the 3:2 pull down of cable 1080i HD movies very well, so this option should be switched on (see below). 480i also looks pretty good after calibration.

On to calibration.

Out of the box, the settings are not optimal (are they ever). For calibration, I followed a guide from CurtPalme, henceforth known as “Kal’s Guide”.

This guide helps you to adjust grayscale and color to get a professional grade calibration. To use Kal’s Guide, you need:

1. The ColorHCFR software (free download).
2. An external color meter.I used Eye-One Display 2 (I’m a serious
amateur photographer and already owned it for computer
monitor calibration).
3. A calibration DVD; Digital Video Essentials-HD Basics,
(I used the Blue Ray version), OR, AVS HD 709 calibration disk (free download).

The AVS HD 709 software is burned on a regular DVD but you need a Blue Ray player to play it. Note, if you use this, you need to identify the correct greyscale patterns yourself.

This TV has no RGB adjustments for brightness or contrast (called RGBLowEnd and RGBHighEnd in Kal’s Guide, sometimes known as RGB bias and RGB gain), so this portion of the grayscale calibration had to be skipped. However, the CMS system allows individual adjustment of RGB for value (brightness), hue and saturation, which is much better than a simple color and hue adjustment.

First off, I ran through both grayscale and primary/secondary color calibrations with the factory settings to see where I was at. I used the default “User” picture settings as the starting point. If you’re not interested in the technical details, skip this section and scroll down to the section RECOMMENDED CALIBRATION SETTINGS FOR LC-C4067UN. Here is a summary of the results with the out-of the box “User” settings.

The deltaE (% error from D65) values for 0 IRE to 100 IRE were as follows:
0 IRE: 123.8%, 10 IRE: 27.4%, 20 IRE: 28.4%, 30 IRE: 28.6%, 40 IRE: 30.6%, 50 IRE: 30.1%, 60 IRE: 29.8%, 70 IRE: 30.2%, 80 IRE: 29.7%, 90 IRE: 26.9%, 100 IRE: 22.7%.

According to Kal’s Guide, a value of <10% is recommended across the entire greyscale range with a value of 3% considered as good as it gets. At around 30% across the board, we are a long way off.

Luminance:
The average luminance curve looks OK, but individual colors are off (blue too high, red too low).

Gamma:
Average is 2.25 (target is 2.2). However the average range from 0 IRE to 100 IRE is 2.1 to 2.39. Red is way off with a range of 2.12 to 2.84.

RGB Levels:
Green is OK, but blue is 30% too high and red is 20% too low across the entire grayscale range. Good news is all curves are relatively flat, except in the 0 IRE – 10 IRE range. This is almost black, so you won’t notice any variations here.

Color Temperature: Kal’s Guide recommends not to pay too much attention to this, but for the record, it stays pretty flat across the range 0 IRE (black) to 100 IRE (white) at around 9000K (well above the 6500K target).

I didn’t record the individual deltaE values for the primary and secondary colors, but according to Kal’s Guide, a value of <10% is recommended across the board with a value of 3% considered as good as it gets. All values were in the high teens and 20s.

ADJUSTMENTS.

The white level was adjusted using contrast in the picture menu. This sets the peak luminance. The overall screen brightness and all color adjustments are derived from this value, so it’s important to set this for your specific viewing conditions. Kal’s Guide recommends a target luminance of 30-40 ftL, which is geared towards viewing in a color-controlled environment i.e. a darkened room. I started here (at 35ftL) and found this setting worked as it should for a dark room at night, but was much too low for daylight viewing (no shadow detail). If you want to use these settings, they are in parenthesis below.

I decided to recalibrate and used a value of around 54ftL instead. I found this works well for daylight viewing and am also happy with it for nighttime viewing in dim light. Note: Backlight was toned down to -6 before contrast adjustment. (You may want to be even higher than 54ftL if you watch in a really bright room or close to a window during the day)

The black level was set according to Kal’s Guide and was adjusted using brightness. As mentioned, this TV doesn’t have RGB grayscale adjustment in the user menu, so that’s it for grayscale adjustment (unless you figure out how to further adjust in the service menus – I didn’t go there). Following the above adjustments, the following results were achieved.

The deltaE values for 0 IRE to 100 IRE grayscale were as follows:
0 IRE: 150%, 10 IRE: 7.9%, 20 IRE: 5.7%, 30 IRE: 9.4%, 40 IRE: 9.8%, 50 IRE: 9.5%, 60 IRE: 9.8%, 70 IRE: 10.7%, 80 IRE: 10.5%, 90 IRE: 10.2%, 100 IRE: 9.9%. Except for pure black, this is getting close to being < 10% across the range. I wasn't able to get it any better than this.

Luminance:
Now blue and green are right on target but red showed only a slight improvement from before (too low).

Gamma: Average is a little higher at around 2.27. The average range from 0 IRE to 100 IRE was tightened. Red is improved but still shows the most variation.

RGB Levels: Red and blue are now around 5-10% below target across the range and green is right on as before. Again all curves are relatively flat, except in the 0 IRE – 10 IRE range. This is almost black, so you won’t notice any variations here.

Color Temperature: Sits on 6500K line but tails off a little to 6200K at 100 IRE.
This is a vast improvement over the default.

Primary and secondary colors were adjusted using the CMS Hue, Saturation and Value settings in the advanced menu to get values as close as possible to the recommended settings in Kal’s Guide for the HDTV REC 709 standard. Following the tweaks, the deltaE values for the primary and secondary colors were as follows; R: 14.8%, G: 8.8%, B: 5.3%, Y: 4.4%, C: 9.7%, M: 7.3%. My goal was to get everything less than 10% per Kal’s Guide. I tried numerous iterations and wasn’t able to get red much better than around 14%.

If any pros out there have any suggestions on how to improve the “red” setting while maintaining good values for everything else, please let me know.
Skin tones don’t seem to be affected, but in a “red-looking scene”, e.g. low color temperature setting such as low tungsten light or sunsets, the “red” effect looks a touch saturated for my taste.

Now blue and green are right on target but red showed only a slight improvement from before (too low).

Gamma: Average is a little higher at around 2.27. The average range from 0 IRE to 100 IRE was tightened. Red is improved but still shows the most variation.

LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Gloss Black Review

I am very happy with this television. After setting it up properly, the picture is excellent. I used the video settings found here in the reviews and on [...]. I compared this TV to other models and the picture was as good or better than any of the other manufacturers. We really wanted a larger screen, but that would have meant a new TV stand, stereo stand, speaker stands. This one fits perfect.

The price is great at 0-450. However, the new one is quite a bit higher priced. The only thing that I do not like is the lack of audio out RCA jacks for my older stereo. I am able to work around this lack of jacks by using the audio jacks on my cable/DVR box.

I have read complaints regarding the sound quality, but it seems pretty good to me.

I would not accept one of these sets if it was free – Marvel – Pensacola
The set-up paper pamphlet tells you nothing but how to put on the base and plug in the set. The DVD instructions have 138 pages for you to print out. The cabinet is reflective material that reflects even the faintest light in the room back from the set cabinet to the viewer and is a pain in the neck. The hookup to the purchaser’s existing sound system requires a special cable, not included, and nomenclature of the cable is not given. The sound-out cable plugs into a ‘laser’ source on back of set, it is NOT an RCA plug-in. The laser connector has to go into a laser receptacle on your system, and without the laser plug-in in your system, one must go and buy a new compatible sound system. I think this set is over-designed for the price, it is good only as an ‘extra’ in a guest room where it is rarely watched or as a computer monitor, and is not for anyone who has any expectations beyond being able to watch it only when nothing else works or is available.
