Sharp LC-C4067UN AQUOS 1920 x 1080 Full HD 1080p LCD HDTV Review

Hi,

This TV is by no means perfect, but I think it’s good value for 1080p. I was a bit paranoid about the TV being 60Hz vs 120Hz, but have found no major issues. I have the TV about 4 weeks and have watched football, ice hockey, track and field and a few blue ray movies on a PS3 and saw no major problems. The film mode in the advanced menu also seems to handle the 3:2 pull down of cable 1080i HD movies very well, so this option should be switched on (see below). 480i also looks pretty good after calibration.

On to calibration.

Out of the box, the settings are not optimal (are they ever). For calibration, I followed a guide from CurtPalme, henceforth known as “Kal’s Guide”.

This guide helps you to adjust grayscale and color to get a professional grade calibration. To use Kal’s Guide, you need:

1. The ColorHCFR software (free download).
2. An external color meter.I used Eye-One Display 2 (I’m a serious
amateur photographer and already owned it for computer
monitor calibration).
3. A calibration DVD; Digital Video Essentials-HD Basics,
(I used the Blue Ray version), OR, AVS HD 709 calibration disk (free download).

The AVS HD 709 software is burned on a regular DVD but you need a Blue Ray player to play it. Note, if you use this, you need to identify the correct greyscale patterns yourself.

This TV has no RGB adjustments for brightness or contrast (called RGBLowEnd and RGBHighEnd in Kal’s Guide, sometimes known as RGB bias and RGB gain), so this portion of the grayscale calibration had to be skipped. However, the CMS system allows individual adjustment of RGB for value (brightness), hue and saturation, which is much better than a simple color and hue adjustment.

First off, I ran through both grayscale and primary/secondary color calibrations with the factory settings to see where I was at. I used the default “User” picture settings as the starting point. If you’re not interested in the technical details, skip this section and scroll down to the section RECOMMENDED CALIBRATION SETTINGS FOR LC-C4067UN. Here is a summary of the results with the out-of the box “User” settings.

The deltaE (% error from D65) values for 0 IRE to 100 IRE were as follows:
0 IRE: 123.8%, 10 IRE: 27.4%, 20 IRE: 28.4%, 30 IRE: 28.6%, 40 IRE: 30.6%, 50 IRE: 30.1%, 60 IRE: 29.8%, 70 IRE: 30.2%, 80 IRE: 29.7%, 90 IRE: 26.9%, 100 IRE: 22.7%.

According to Kal’s Guide, a value of <10% is recommended across the entire greyscale range with a value of 3% considered as good as it gets. At around 30% across the board, we are a long way off.

Luminance:
The average luminance curve looks OK, but individual colors are off (blue too high, red too low).

Gamma:
Average is 2.25 (target is 2.2). However the average range from 0 IRE to 100 IRE is 2.1 to 2.39. Red is way off with a range of 2.12 to 2.84.

RGB Levels:
Green is OK, but blue is 30% too high and red is 20% too low across the entire grayscale range. Good news is all curves are relatively flat, except in the 0 IRE – 10 IRE range. This is almost black, so you won’t notice any variations here.

Color Temperature: Kal’s Guide recommends not to pay too much attention to this, but for the record, it stays pretty flat across the range 0 IRE (black) to 100 IRE (white) at around 9000K (well above the 6500K target).

I didn’t record the individual deltaE values for the primary and secondary colors, but according to Kal’s Guide, a value of <10% is recommended across the board with a value of 3% considered as good as it gets. All values were in the high teens and 20s.

ADJUSTMENTS.

The white level was adjusted using contrast in the picture menu. This sets the peak luminance. The overall screen brightness and all color adjustments are derived from this value, so it’s important to set this for your specific viewing conditions. Kal’s Guide recommends a target luminance of 30-40 ftL, which is geared towards viewing in a color-controlled environment i.e. a darkened room. I started here (at 35ftL) and found this setting worked as it should for a dark room at night, but was much too low for daylight viewing (no shadow detail). If you want to use these settings, they are in parenthesis below.

I decided to recalibrate and used a value of around 54ftL instead. I found this works well for daylight viewing and am also happy with it for nighttime viewing in dim light. Note: Backlight was toned down to -6 before contrast adjustment. (You may want to be even higher than 54ftL if you watch in a really bright room or close to a window during the day)

The black level was set according to Kal’s Guide and was adjusted using brightness. As mentioned, this TV doesn’t have RGB grayscale adjustment in the user menu, so that’s it for grayscale adjustment (unless you figure out how to further adjust in the service menus – I didn’t go there). Following the above adjustments, the following results were achieved.

The deltaE values for 0 IRE to 100 IRE grayscale were as follows:
0 IRE: 150%, 10 IRE: 7.9%, 20 IRE: 5.7%, 30 IRE: 9.4%, 40 IRE: 9.8%, 50 IRE: 9.5%, 60 IRE: 9.8%, 70 IRE: 10.7%, 80 IRE: 10.5%, 90 IRE: 10.2%, 100 IRE: 9.9%. Except for pure black, this is getting close to being < 10% across the range. I wasn't able to get it any better than this.

Luminance:
Now blue and green are right on target but red showed only a slight improvement from before (too low).

Gamma: Average is a little higher at around 2.27. The average range from 0 IRE to 100 IRE was tightened. Red is improved but still shows the most variation.

RGB Levels: Red and blue are now around 5-10% below target across the range and green is right on as before. Again all curves are relatively flat, except in the 0 IRE – 10 IRE range. This is almost black, so you won’t notice any variations here.

Color Temperature: Sits on 6500K line but tails off a little to 6200K at 100 IRE.
This is a vast improvement over the default.

Primary and secondary colors were adjusted using the CMS Hue, Saturation and Value settings in the advanced menu to get values as close as possible to the recommended settings in Kal’s Guide for the HDTV REC 709 standard. Following the tweaks, the deltaE values for the primary and secondary colors were as follows; R: 14.8%, G: 8.8%, B: 5.3%, Y: 4.4%, C: 9.7%, M: 7.3%. My goal was to get everything less than 10% per Kal’s Guide. I tried numerous iterations and wasn’t able to get red much better than around 14%.

RECOMMENDED CALIBTATION SETTINGS FOR LC-C4067UN

If any pros out there have any suggestions on how to improve the “red” setting while maintaining good values for everything else, please let me know.
Skin tones don’t seem to be affected, but in a “red-looking scene”, e.g. low color temperature setting such as low tungsten light or sunsets, the “red” effect looks a touch saturated for my taste.

Regards.

LG 47LH30 47-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Gloss Black Review

I purchased this TV recently as an upgrade from my smaller and 3.5 year old LCD TV. This one is definitely a step in the right direction. The deciding factors for my purchase of this TV would be 1. it doesn’t contain true motion technology. (that technology’s appearance has always bothered me. yes, i read that it could turned off with the simple push of a button, but why spend an extra 0 for something that i’m just going to turn off?) 2. The price. I paid 5 which is pretty fantastic for the brand and quality (thus far).

The TV is extremely light weight for the size, which is greatly appreciated. The setup is a breeze. The expert picture setup is a nice option and very helpful. And finally having an Energy Star TV is a huge plus as well.

Now as for the picture, I use DishNetwork, a Bluray player, and an HDDVD player. I do not use HD Satellite, which I will remedy eventually, BUT I will say that the picture while watching TV is “heavenly”. It seems bright, slightly washed out, some colors are very bright.. others, not so much. Yes, i’ve played around with the settings as much as humanly possible (the expert setup is amazingly simple and helpful). My only conclusion is that this must be caused by the Satellite Receiver’s output, but I will say that I did not have this problem on my previous television. On the other hand, when I watch a DVD, Bluray, or HDDVD the picture is well worth it. The 50,000:1 contrast ratio isn’t the highest available, yes, but it is still noticeably darker than my last television. It really adds a nice element when watching a movie. The refresh rate isn’t the best as well, but I don’t notice any blurring during action shots.. and honestly, i’d much rather have the 5ms refresh rate over that “soap opera”/paper cutout technology that seems to be everywhere nowadays. Conclusion, I got exactly what I wanted with the picture of the TV. For the price, definitely worth it.

Sound, I couldn’t tell you. I run all of my sound through an Onkyo 7.1 surround sound system. The TV does include a digital optical output, which is a great plus for those who want to run a clean looking and sounding system. I figure most people will, or eventually will, run this through an exterior source.

Overall, a great buy. Not the thinnest or most attractive TV on the market, but it’s still clean. I dig it. The price for the brand really makes this purchase for me. Hopefully this will be helpful for future buyers!

Great if you win the panel lottery… Good otherwise. – the dude who reviewed –
I’m generally happy with the TV for the price I paid. It’s a big, entry level 1080p model so I wan’t expecting too much. The limited inputs don’t matter to me since I run through an AVR first and the casual observer probably won’t care about my major gripe (see below).

Pros:
Great price for a 47″ 1080p
Advanced color correction software
Esthetically pleasing

1 BIG Con:
The panel lottery! There is a big gap in the quality you can expect out of the picture depending on the panel you end up getting (you can check which panel you have by shining a flashlight through the grill on the back). I ended up with a Chi Mei panel (CMO) which is one of the cheapest panels you can put into a TV. What kills me is that increasingly, manufacturers are using 1 set of components for the 1st run off the line, then switching to cheaper components (without changing the model number) after cNet, Amazon and the blogosphere at large sing the praises of the first run. Sony was sued in a class action for this garbage.

From what I’ve gathered around the internet, no less than 3 panels have been used in this model and it DOES make a difference.

I did a true side by side with an “off-brand” 3 year old 720p Olevia (which this was replacing)…. Brighthouse HD cable-box into both using HDMI, factory defaults. Anecdotally, I can say that the Olevia had much more detail in the black levels. I thought it was impossible, so I tweaked the LG as much as I could using different modes/advanced options and I could not get the same level of detail in the dark areas as the Olevia. Blacks were either gray and blocky or completely black…. no in between.

My jaw dropped when I watched the ending credits of a show with extremely fast horizontally scrolling credits (white sans-serif text on a black background). On the Olevia I could read every word but on the LG, it was a looooong blur. I could only read the words when I forced my eye to track the words as they flew by and even that was a challenge. The Olevia had originally listed its response time as 8ms (did I mention 3 years ago?!?!?), while the box this thing came in said 5ms. NO WAY. Maybe when the model was orginally released (with top-shelf components), and filed with the FCC and reviewed everywhere online… but there is no doubt in my mind that the “off-brand” 3 year old 720p OLEVIA handles motion better than this brand new LG.

Granted I’m not using scientific methods or precision measuring equipment. This is just how I’m seeing it. I really wanted to love this TV but right now I think in order to get what’s on the box/in the specs, you have to buy the newest model.

I understand that there are times when a manufacturer has to change component suppliers, but I feel the industry as a whole is effectively baiting and switching to increase their bottom line. Lesson learned.

Good value – Anthony Bucknor – Largo MD
This was my first major online electronic purchase, initially I was sceptical, but after taking the leap, I am quite pleased with the unit and the delivery was on time.
I am now a “fan” of Amazon.

money – Eric Smith – seattle , wa
The LG – 47 in TV was a great deal LG makes the major parts for #1 brand tv,s . I love my set picture is better than sets costing ,500 and more. Its the best $ spent. Sound was ok buy a theater with it, i bought the LG system for 5. extremely low destortion sound. Amazing TV picture crisp and clean. Go ahead buy the LG you will be happy. Im in love with my LG. The downer is remote instructions are unclear and navigation with it is hard to set up, take your time and guess a little. Best set i have ever bought. i give it 5 stars.

LG 47SL90 47-Inch 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV, Glossy Black Review

One of the main reasons to get this flat panel over others is the lack of glare. I looked at all brands and they all seemed to display the stores mercury vapor lights quite well except for the LG models. There is no glare from my windows or overhead lights at home.. it is very nice. The other beauty of this set is the clarity and display of colors that I didn’t know existed. We popped in Nemo for the kids when we first got and stared in disbeleif at how beautiful the charecters were in bright tropical colors… It is also only about an inch thick and weighs only 40 pounds so easy for 1 person to move or even mount on the wall. I couldn’t be happier with this model from LG.

Excellent choice – Dr.B.Anil kumar – Dubai
I have this LG SL90 for the past 2 weeks.
The picture quality is excellent
Even the sound quality for such a thin TV is good
The black level is excellent and I didnot find any motion blur even in fast action scenes. I am using LG bluray player through HDMI connection.

Great TV, bad TruMotion! – Houston Jowell – Beaumont, Tx
This TV is fantastic looking, but for watching movies the TruMotion setting must be turned off. Otherwise, the movies move like cheap shot on video movies. Very strange. After that’s shut off, everything looks outstanding.

Better than expected – M. Fenwick – Bluegrass State
Bought the 47SL90 just before Christmas after researching many HDTVs including Samsung and Sony. Overall the LG is better than I expected. Picture is just fantastic, with super bright colors, great blacks and whites, contrast, tru-motion video, etc. Being hearing impaired in the human voice audio frequencies, the Clear Voice feature is great. I can finally watch TV without closed captioning, or turning the volume up. Although I found the audio quality satisfying, I have added a Bose speaker system with sub-woofer to make it even better. Watching Blu-ray through my PS3 makes the movies jump out at you. Fantastic!

Great set, shakey service – Spartan Child –
This TV has an amazing picture from every source that I have hooked up to it (Comcast HD, XBox 360, PS3 & Blu Ray). That’s the end of the good news.

The customer service folks from LG are not all that helpful and you’ll get transfered a few times before getting to the TV Warrany people. I spent 55 minutes on the phone during my last experience, the majority of that time was spent listening to elevator music, waiting to get an appointment with one of their authorized repair goons. My Amazing picture has been amazingly broken for 37 days now … they’ve made two attempts to fix it and both failed (well, actually, one succeeded for about 4 hours), the remainder of that 37 days has been spent waiting on backorder parts and rescheduling appointments.

Hopefully yours will not break down because LG, although they claim to be the greatest company since sliced peanut butter, do not blink at allowing a customer to sit with a broken product for over a month during the holidays. I purchased two LCD TV’s for Christmas and you can bet your sweet rear that they do not have an “LG” label on them.

Did I already mention that it looked great while it worked (almost a whole year).

Toshiba 46XV640U 46-Inch 1080p Full HD LCD TV with ClearFrame 120 Mhz Review

I was able to pick this up at Costco at a lower price (0) than any other 46″ 1080p/120hz set I’d shopped for save the Insignia at Best Buy. After several weeks with the set it is a joy to watch and at this price point I am very happy to do without the first generation, ethernet based internet connectivity found on more expensive sets, especially since those same services are available with wifi on mid priced blu ray players.

The other main give up with this set is that it uses 3:2 pull down technology for 1080p/24 fps input (i.e, blu-ray) instead of the Regza series’ 5:5 pull down which promises smoother motion. In fact, when viewing the absolutely amazing-looking Blu-Ray of Troy, I did detect some jutter on slow distance panning scenes and slow moving close up scenes. It is just slightly annoying. Changing the Blu-Ray’s display setting from 1080p/24fps to plain 1080p/60fps eliminated the jutter with a barely perceptible give up in overall picture quality, if any at all. Jutter is not an issue with regular broadcast TV via my DirecTV connection, and the 120 hz setting produces no blur at all on fast moving action scenes and sports. If I’d known about the jutter issue on blu-ray, I might have price shopped for the entry level Regza XV-645u model with 5:5 pulldown, but I did save about 0 dollars with this set.

This HDTV has a very flexible and intuitive picture adjustment capability, which enables you to experiment with color temperature, intensity, contrast, brightness and all the usual settings quickly and easily until you find what suits you and your room. The four pre-sets (standard, sports, video and movie) are limited but give you a place to start and adjust the picture to your liking from the easy to access menus. The colors are deep and true with my DirecTV 1080i feed, and the set looks great on a variety of color settings. The ‘Smooth’ video setting that enables the 120 HZ processing has produced no blur that I can see; motion on broadcast TV looks remarkably smooth. I adjusted my rating to 4 stars due to a couple of minor peeves in addition to the blu-ray jutter: the DynaLight backlight auto – adjust is a little slow and sometimes adjusts and re-adjusts during a scene; I might turn this feature off. I have also noticed that the color fades when viewed from about a 140-50 degree angle, not the 178 degrees advertised with most of these sets. With Costco’s 90 day return and one year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty, it was well worth it to get a great picture on a set that might have cost twice the money less than a year ago. If you’re looking for a basic-featured set at great price, you won’t be disappointed with this set, but the Regza series TV’s have superior technology for 24 fps blu-ray at a slightly higher price point than this set.

Great TV for the price – A. Pathak – Santa Clara, CA
we bought this TV at our local costco store and are very happy with it.

The first TV that we bought had a manufacturing defect and couldn’t be powered on. We were extremely disappointed because the picture quality, color was probably very natural among the other TVs at store and didn’t want to miss on this TV. So we thought of giving it a second try.

After getting the new TV as replacement, it has been very pleasing experience. Colors are just awesome. At times, I feel that audio level is average. It could have been better but i won’t fret about it. I can always hook up an external audio device. The response time was stated as <8ms which I can't figure out watching many action movies. It has 3 HDMI inputs which is standard these days. Also you get, S-Video port and VGA input port, and it's very convenient.

All in all, it was a very good buy for us.

A wonderful Television! – Baltic Books – Portland, OR USA
We found this television for a great price at Costco. We were attracted to it immediately by the full quality of its sound. For some reason most large LCD units have rotten sound- significantly worse than your old analog sets.

At home we use this in our large bedroom. It has great natural sound for basic TV watching. We also have it connected to a home 7.1 theater set up (Win 7 media computer, Optoma EP745 projector, Sony STR-DN1000 7.1 Receiver, Comcast Cable).

Additionally we’re using it as a computer monitor, including watching streaming movies via Netflix and also avi/dvix files from hard drive. The monitor desktop looks great!–we use a VGA set-up for computer to TV (we’re using the computer DVI for our projector, but I tried both and it looks even better with an HD DVI signal).

One of the other little surprises we discovered the other day– our Sony receiver’s “Bravia” function started connecting to Toshiba’s corresponding “Regza-Link” feature. Essentially the TV and Receiver communicated to work out each other’s basic settings when one is turned on (you still may have to tweak it is set-up a bit). So I suppose that means one (Regza or Bravia) is compatible with the other. I don’t know which or if both are, but it works on ours.

The picture quality is also great. We have a 52″ Samsung in our living room. The display– brightness, contrast etc. is every bit as good as the Samsung which we love.

This is an awesome television choice.

Better than the comparable 46″ Sony/Sharp/Vizio – Gex N. Efx – Santa Clara, CA
HD, Blu-Ray, & PS3 gaming look top notch on this LCD. Scrolling text looks clear w/ 120hz refresh rate. I got this from Costco and had the chance to compare the Toshiba side by side w/ the comparable 46″ Sony, Sharp, Vizio & Samsung. The Toshiba & Samsung had the best picture quality & details in the blacks. No contrast ratio spec that I could find, however the darks have more detail than the Sony, Sharp & Vizio. The only difference between the Samsung & Toshiba was that the color on the Samung looked better, but for the price the Toshiba was the way to go. I’ve had it for 2 weeks and have not had any problems with it. At first I thought the menu screens were a bit basic and inefficient compared to the Sony menus, however after some time it actually is quite intuitive and has convenient shortcuts. I especially like how to switch between inputs, channels through favorites and or the channel history. I am very happy w/ this LCD TV.

Vizio VA26L 26 Inch 720P HDTV LCD TV Accessory Bundle Review

My family enjoys this Vizio VA26L daily, and we have had no issues. This is better suited to a bedroom or kitchen sizewise. The picture is great compared to it’s market segment, it has lots of input options and the price is right, (9). The setup wizard took minutes, and controls are easy to navigate by adults and kids. The warranty is for one year, most are 90 days. Service is mail in, as is for most sets under 30″. I chose an extended warranty just in case.

It was great until the backlight burned out. – Whopper – Land of Beer, Bratwurst and Cheese
The backlight on the VA26L lasted 1 year and 3 months. Maybe it was a fluke, but I won’t be buying a Vizio again. Up until that point, the TV worked well.

Some problems with my mac mini using dvi to hdmi cable-can’t get screen sized properly, so I went with VGA. It looks awesome during video playback.

Speakers are loud and sound quality is decent for the size of the speakers.

  • Sylvania 6620LG 20 Inch LCD Tv Review

Very good TV, just enough for my girl’s room. To my perception the colors and image sharpness are amazing. I mounted this TV on an articulated wall mount and the combination is perfect for saving space. I did not give 5 stars because of the remote control, although it works ok the buttons are really small and overall it looks like a “piñata” article. But the TV is good for the price.

Pretty good – E. Zeitlin – Vienna VA
Nice picture (not HD). The menus are rather limited, and the remote is very basic and feels cheaply made.

After a while, I decided to hang the set on a wall. It was a big hassle to remove the base, but then it was easy to mount to a wall bracket.

Sylvania TV – G. Cipriano – Phoenix, AZ
Very good tv for the price. Clear picture. Good for 2nd bedroom or guest room. Remote control looks cheap but it works fine.

Be careful – Denise G. Hinds – TX USA
I’m extremely disappointed in this product, the company, and “service”. Within 1 month of receiving the TV, the picture went bad. It had the appearance of looking at a negative in color. I called the company who seemed less than interested in helping resolve the problem. The best they could do is send me to an authorized service center. Closest one is 60 miles from my house. They never offered to send me a new one and let me return the old one. So, I take it to the ASC. More than 2 weeks later, I’m told the panel is bad and they’ll have to send it to the Funai Corporation and its going to take a month or more to get a new one back. Now I’ve been out a television for over 2 months, and it was “Brand New”.
I will never buy Sylvania again and thought it important to let others be aware of their sloppy product and inefficient warranty terms.

    LG 19LG30 19-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

This LCD HDTV is a good size and the speakers aren’t bad at all. The only issue I have with 19LG30, and it may be on all LG TVs, is that the four tuners do not integrate with eachother.

19LG30 has NTSC, ATSC and QAM (plus an broadcast tuner) but they are all given their own seperate folder that will not allow you to integrate them when scrolling through channels. Put more simply, if you press up (on the remote) and are on channel 5 (5-0, standard def.) with the CATV tuner, you cannot go to the HD channel 5-1 (which LG puts in the CADTV tuner folder) you will go to the next in-line standard definition channel, ie. 6. One needs to press 5 again on the remote to go to 5-1 or 5-2 etc. Once in the HD folder or CADTV, pressing up will only scroll through that folder channels. So if you want to go from channel 7.1 (HD channel) to channel 8 (SD channel) you cannot logically and simply press up on the remote: you must press 8, wait for the delay, and the TV then switches to the CATV folder of channels. Bollocks!

This “set-up” is totally frustrating if you are using this TV without a cable box, which is kind of the idea for a 19″ TV, and typically scroll channels using up and down on a remote.

I am not sure if this will be an issue after 17 February however, as there is a seperate folder labeled DTV in the channel menu (which remains empty after auto-tuning). If DTV integrates all the channels (once it is online) than this is a dead isssue and this is a 5 star TV. Otherwise why LG do you have such a poor operating system that can’t enable/integrate the different tuners? Samsung and Sony integrate the tuners into one folder/line-up.

Good TV – Steve – Ohio
The TV offers a nice contrast ratio, for a small package. It has built in settings for like game, movie and sports. Most in this size don’t offer that. It also has for its speakers, the settings offers different sound settings. Standard (which is the default) sounds like a tin can. But if you change it, it sounds nice. So I can not recommend the default sound.

    Nice TV – D. Haddock –
This TV has very good picture quality and reasonably good sound quality. It has a wide angle of vision so the picture stays clear and vivid when you move around the room. This was a huge concern for me when shopping for a small LCD TV. The construction appears to be of high quality. Very happy with this TV and would buy this model again.
